Chamonix Snow Report: 11th January 2004

I can only guess roughly at what the conditions are like at the moment - there is no chance of a fair-weather skier, such as myself, going out in what is going on out there! It has been snowing almost solidly for the last THREE days and it is continuing to do so. In town it is actually raining and this has removed the snow covering on the streets. Friends of mine have been out in Le Tour and Les Grands Montets and reported having fun, even if they couldn't see where they were going. At least the slopes were quiet.

The snow-rain level is around 1800m at the moment. This level will go down to around 1200m during the night and is expected to raise up again in the daytime tomorrow. The implications of this is a wet snow fall up to 2300m with dry snow above 2500m. Windspeeds are high, and the creation of heavy snow layers and slabs. This implies a greater avalanche risk with just the weight of a skier (or less) required to set off a slide. Take extreme care off-piste, take a guide, or better still wait until conditions have stabilised.
