Chamonix Snow Report: 13th February 2011

featured in Snow report Author Kieran Sharp, Updated

We now have a small amount of snow on the forecast! And the clouds have been rolling slightly and hazily in to the valley for brief but teasing periods of time. It seems like the snow dance done its work, however there is only a small amount of snow forecasted but hopefully if enough positive dance energy is directed to the snow gods there might be a more acceptable amount fall during the course of the next few days!

The snow dance initially looked like it wasn't going to happen, and only a few people actually hung around while drummer Dave Rogerson started enticing people in who kindly offered his services for the event. As 2100hrs approached more and more people started to join in and eventually the snow dance was away! There was a giant conga and loads of individual and strange dance moves, followed by a much more appropriate chant than an uncomfortable silence which was originally planned. There was actually around double the amount of people looking at people dancing, and I would say that this might well have something to do with the small amount of snow forecast, so we may inevitably require another snow dance event. Should you find yourself in a more stand back and stare sort of situation, take in to account this now clear and present fact and join in!

After the event, people hung around a while and sent as much positive snow energy to its rightful place, followed by many many drinks to appease the gods in La Terrasse bar, who kindly donated Jagers at discount prices!

Similar conditions remain on the hill, mostly sunny weather still and slushy stuff in the afternoons. I'm not even going to bother with the speech… feels like spring and its winter, its spring now, it feels like spring, it is spring! But spring gets snow too! So not to fear we shall keep snow dancing and join in when it's appropriate or you are instructed to do so, we will have many dumps to come!

In spring you can get some crazy stuff happen with snow on the off piste, as it heats up so much all the tracks end up disappearing, freezing at night, and then fresh slush is possible the next afternoon! Take this in to account and hit some of the south facing hills and find some of those out of the way little slush spots! Hiring the services of a guide will always help you find areas such as these. Also hiring the services of a Ski or Snowboard host through your chalet company can be a great way to explore hidden spots to jib that only the locals know about!
