Chamonix Snow Report: 13th January 2004

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

Well this is going to be a huge week for snow at the tops of the mountains. It is absolutely pelting it down with rain in town, and has been for days now. The rain limit was around 2-2300m today, which has destroyed most of the 'picturesque' (can't ski on it anyway) looking snow on the trees and in the town. It seems that cross-country skiing will be off for a while.

The avalanche warning has been 5/5 today - which is rare. This coupled with the high winds means that almost all the lifts have been out of action, with the exception of the lower Cham (beginner) slopes and Les Houches. Most people wanting to ski have gone through to Courmayeur (Italy). Temperatures are set to drop and the snow to return over the next two days, and obviously at the top of the mountains it will have been majorly dumping.
