Chamonix Snow Report: 17th January 2004

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

Well it has been snowing well last night and lightly during the day today. Quite a lot of the lifts and slopes have been closed due to high winds and the Grands Montets was completely closed to allow the commemoration of two personnel who died last week in a helicopter accident. The heliocopter hit cables in a storm whilst checking avalanche areas.

On the pistes elsewhere the snow is magical with deep fresh powder. Off-piste the avalance risk is still high at altitude (4/5) so is not recommended at all for anyone to go without a local guide or instructor, and even then....Visibility is still poor and a lot of people have headed to Courmayeur (Italy).

Snow is forecast for tomorrow (Sunday) again. However, the weather for the up-coming week will be much better than last's, meaning those who have booked will repeat the rewards.
