Chamonix Snow Report: 19th December 2004

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

As per our last estimate the snow has been falling constantly throughout the daytime today right down even in the town centre. Although it was supposed to have snowed since Friday, yesterday remained fairly snow free.

This morning however there was a good 10cm covering everywhere, mainly wet heavy snow in town. The majority of the lifts and pistes remain shut, partly due to the high risk of avalanches, high winds, ice on the machinery, and quite probably because the conditions are generally 'murky' - you wouldn't really want to go out in them!

The lower slopes in town are open so beginners and kids are able to get a few runs in. The skiable limited, without snow cannons is around 1200-2000m depending on the orientation. Cross-country trails remain closed however.

The forecast is that the skies will generally clear throughout tonight, and breaks in the clouds throughout the day tomorrow and until Tuesday.
