Chamonix Snow Report: 19th January 2004

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

Things are settling down after one of the biggest snowfalls in the last five years last week. As to be expected there is a superb covering of snow and it is possible to slide comfortably right down to the town! Having said that quite a few areas are still off limits, and some of the lifts were late to open this morning due to avalanche blasting.

Off-piste still is posted as a 4/5 above 2000m and this is related to windslabs and fresh powder snow which has been blown all over by the winds. The principal concern is the lack of cohesion between the different layers. The snow is very cold and fine. Only consider going off-piste if you have had training or are going with a guide.
