Chamonix Snow Report: 1st November 2004

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

If you are just joining us now for the run up to the winter - Welcome! Not quite the new season as yet - there is a dusting of snow on the tops but nothing quite worth writing a Snow Report about even if we could get to it (without a hike - the lifts are closed!). Nonetheless the weather is decidedly colder and wetter than previously at resort level, so in the clouds it could be getting interesting.

As a run down to the winter and a bit of a re-cap to whet your appetites here is a run down of some of the highlights for this season:

11th November - supposed opening of Les Grands Montets ski area on the weekends until whole resort opens on 4th December.

Chamonix town centre gets a new walkway along the river The final stages which see the opening up of the 'River Arve walkway' from the centre of town and giving access to the Rue des Moulins were unveiled recently. The zone is still in construction but removal of the protective boards gave a glimpse of things to come. The walkway opens up the Rue des Moulins, much to the approval of the businesses down there, and riverside access within town, which there isn't that much of currently.

NEW lift-pass type announced for this season The Compagnie du Mont Blanc (lift company) has released prices for lift-passes for this coming season, and includes this year 5, 10, and 15 non-consecutive days passes, valid from 01/11/04 to 31/05/05. The new passes are priced €208, €330, and €480 respectively, meaning cheaper occasional skiing and only one visit to the cash-desk.

New Chamonix lift for Christmas 'Construction looks well underway on the new Vallorcine - Le Tour lift, due to open at Christmas. No doubt the Compagnie du Mont Blanc are hoping to lure visitors from Switzerland, the border of which is only a couple of miles from Vallorcine, rather than make amenities better for the tiny hamlet.

You can check the above reports (and others) in our News section.

Hope that keeps you posted for the time being - check back regularly from now on!
