Chamonix Snow Report: 22nd December 2003

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

Well as predicted we have had a reasonable snowfall over night, giving that Chistmas blanket to the town.

It would seem early indications are revealing 15-40cm of new powder at altitude (depending on which altitude and ski area!). There are still only a few lifts open at the moment - 10 out of 47, giving access to the Grands Montets, Brevent-Flegere, Le Tour/Vallorcine, and the Montenvers. You can also ski in Courmayeur where a lot of lifts and pistes are also open.

The Aiguille du Midi cable car is closed for de-icing and testing pre-main season. List-pass prices are also reduced accordingly by 30%. The Vallée Blanche is still lacking sufficient snow-cover to make it skiable. Cross-country-skiing on the valley floor is also not available as yet.

Whilst the number of lifts/pistes open remain small there is still lots of access to the 'near to piste' off-piste but be aware that the avalanche warning is currently set to high and that visibility is below average for going further afield.

The weather forecast is set to be cold with continued snow falls.
