Chamonix Snow Report: 22nd November 2004

A quick update on the conditions, still no skiing though!

There was the first snowfall of the season in town at the end of last week and conditions have been bordering on the -6 and -7s, although it has been warmer at the top of the mountain with a fair degree of temperature inversion going on.

The roads are fairly icy and frozen up and there is a fair amount of body-heat draining moisture in the air. I realise that this is not painting the most welcoming of pictures of Chamonix at this time of the year, but hey I prefer to be honest.

On Saturday night, as outside wasn't cold enough(!), we decided it was high time we went to check out a game of ice hockey at the ice rink. Chamonix's local team were playing against Lyon, and whilst Chamonix seemed to retain better possession and were on the attack they didn't seem to have the finish. Lyon on the other hand had a few lucky breaks and put the puck in the back of the net. At 4, 5 to Lyon in the closing moments it all became quite tense, but a last moment score for Chamonix took the score to 5 all with only 31 seconds remaining on the clock.

Being completely new to the principals of the game, yeah we get the basics, we have made a mental note to get them explained for next time. Terry from the Micro Brewery de Chamonix, being Canadian, seems to know his stuff so we're going to get in touch with him.

Nonetheless, the hockey is definitely a great spectator sport, with a couple beers at the MBC before/after it is quite a night out: an experience worth going to have a look at whilst you are here. Wear more clothing than you would do for going outside in though!
