Chamonix Snow Report: 25th April 2010

So that's it for Brevent, Flegere, Le Tour, Courmayeur, Verbier, all except Grands Montets that are on the Mont Blanc Unlimited pass are now closed after last lift today. Grands Montets will be open until the 9th May with a big party next Sunday 2nd May on the hill (Free ride days) with music, big jumps and rails, wing suit riders performing tricks just above the slopes, along with paragliders, zip lines and a large water slide for those who dare to send their boards or skis over a pool of water at high speed.....and loads more to keep the crowds entertained! If you're out for this event it's recommended that you come early as it really does draw the crowds in, being the only mountain except from the Aiguille that's open and one of those days that people in the valley know they just cant miss!

The Aiguille du Midi is still open for business and will be throughout the rest of the season, inter-season and throughout the whole summer. A lot of routes on in this high mountain area come in to good condition this time of year and a lot of skiers and snowboarders who enjoy very steep terrain get a chance to ride some of the steepest slopes possible and it is in fact possible to ride every month of the year here in Chamonix, all be it with dangers during the summer months, no pistes and a vast amount of mountaineering knowledge is essential to complete the majority of the routes up here. Guides operate year round in the Chamonix Valley and they really are a good idea to hire to take you on an adventure at any time of year, using their knowledge and experience to guide you through some of the dangerous but amazing terrain accessible from the Aiguille du Midi.

Once the parties have finished in Chamonix and the Grands Montets lift closes, I have my eyes set on a few routes up the Aiguille which I will be watching carefully to see when they are in best condition. Before the season started back in October, we had a really good ski and in perfect powder all to ourselves on the Triangle du Mont Blanc du Tacul, which is fairly easy to get to from the Midi by traversing the plateau and climbing straight up towards the triangle rock structure on the Mont Blanc du Tacul. Once there, you can simply ride back down the way you came, although you do have to climb back up to the lift station to get down!

We have had many more sunny warm days here in Chamonix which is perfect for riding in some nice soft slushy conditions and in good spirits with all the sun we've been getting, although one last nice big dump of snow wouldn't go a miss! After our final days riding around the resorts that closed today you could see why it was becoming necessary as the lower south facing slopes where really starting to slide away and the pistes were becoming very slushy by the end of the day rendering most wax ineffective!

Grand Montets is really coming in to its own now with its higher altitude and North facing slopes its managed to hold on to the snow a lot longer, and it is still possible to have a good bit of fun in the off piste, jumping off rocks and spinning off cat tracks, so until the next dump of snow that's what we will mostly be doing before the big party next week!

don't forget that if you are in town for the end of season party on the hill, remember to drop in to the Office Bar in Argentiere for there crazy end of season BBQ on there terrace there and not only that but they will be open through the inter-season and all through the Summer so it really is the place to visit whenever your in the valley!

Check out what to do around town once the lifts have closed with our Apres Ski Report - a weekly round up of what's hot and where to party in Chamonix!
