Chamonix Snow Report: 26th April 2011

featured in Snow report Author Kieran Sharp, Updated

Following the latest announcement from the Compagnie du Mont Blanc, it looks like we are officially in the last week of the winter season in Chamonix now.

Access to and from certain areas of the mountain is becoming more and more difficult. The top lift at Les Grands Montets is still running and you can ride the front face back down towards the Bochard bubble lift, or take the backside route followed by a muddy/patchy snow walk/ski out.

The Bochard is still in pretty good nick and you can still ride all the way to the bottom of this lift, but no further than that. Getting the chair lift up or down from the mountain now has necessary muddy walks, but it is still running and they are holding on to what little snow there is to make it possible for us to ride as long as possible during this particularly dry season.

Saying that, there has been a lot of cumulous cloud growth over the past few days threatening to pour and yesterday it finally chucked a summer time amount of rain down in the valley with a wee bit of snow up high. It has made the air substantially cooler, so if much more comes through we could get a dump of snow where it's truly needed on the lower parts of the mountain.

There was a fear that the lifts may have closed by today but the guys working hard on the pistes have managed to keep hold of a couple of high runs for us to enjoy and if you are out this week you will be sure to have some fun on and off the slopes.

If you are coming out to Chamonix, or thinking about it, as long as you come out with the attitude of enjoying the mountains, whether it's riding a bike, going for a climb or a hike, or a lucky last ski or snowboard, then you will be sure to have fun during a stay in the Chamonix valley.

We are one of the few resorts in the Alps still open for business and considering that the only other resorts that are still open are year round glacial skiing resorts, it's worth dropping a mention to the Compagnie du Mont Blanc what a good job they have done keeping runs open in summer conditions. Maybe it's time they have a think about high mountain glacial summer skiing here too?
