Chamonix Snow Report: 28th April 2014

Powder days return right at the end of the season

What a difference a week makes.. one minute you're digging out your BBQ and breaking open a new bottle of sun tan lotion, and the next, the heavens have opened and the snow has returned to Chamonix!

Yesterday there was a good 30cm of fresh powder up at Grands Montets, and around another 20-25cm today.

Megan headed up early on Saturday morning where the queues to get up to the top of the Grands Montets were huge first thing - The best weather of the weekend was forecast, so lots of people were keen to get up high before the rain and snow closed in. Once we eventually got up to the top, we got fresh tracks on the side of the pylones piste right down to the Herse chair. The snow here was slightly windblown and no light January powder, but the bumps were well covered and the top layer was fairly soft. The snow was also soft on the piste at the top of the Bochard, getting a bit heavier as you headed back down to the mid station.

Yesterday Lorne was enjoying freshies although the visibility was pretty poor as you can read in his blog, with much of the same today... Low clouds, poor visibility, but plenty more snow.. Yesterday you could do laps of the top of GM and find no real queue to go straight back up again .. bonus! It's not often you can say that happens :-)

The forecast for the rest of this week looks pretty snow right through to the weekend, with perhaps a nice sunny break expected on Thursday for those of us on a Bank Holiday?? Let's hope so!

Next Sunday sees the closing party at GM and they don't normally fail to disappoint. Just for the day lift pass prices will be 10 euros, so come on up and join in the fun! In the mean time, enjoy the last few powder days of winter :-)
