Chamonix Snow Report: 28th February 2011

featured in Snow report Author Kieran Sharp, Updated

A super amazing dump of snow fell yesterday here in Chamonix! Still not quite enough for valley bottom riding, but enough to keep us riding fresh pow on any hill we happened to be on yesterday or today! We were looking at having more of a white out day today but all who decided to look out their window at around 8am found that most of the valley was clear! Pretty much every hill is in condition now, there is amazing stuff to ride on all of them, so all who venture to this wonderful valley this week will be blessed by some brilliant conditions which is much more appropriate and acceptable to this time of year!

So many fresh tracks were had today all over the valley, and no mountain was particularly busy, with everyone spread out equally amongst all the hills, so everyone got a good share of powder to ride. I was riding fresh from first bins till last. I started at the Grand Montets with only a few people on the slopes, but with the only cloud hanging around most of the mountain and being able to see that Flegere looked amazingly un-touched and completely in the sun I decided to ride as fast as I could possibly achieve down the home run at Grand Montets. This was an amazing experience as most where riding higher up and not a single person was on the run and fresh powder corduroy welcomed my speedy descent. The only turns necessary were for getting around the bends in the piste, so terminal velocity quickly approached, followed by a bus waiting to take me straight to Flegere.

A lot of tourists believe that Chamonix isn't such a cool resort because the hills aren't all linked, however there is a great bus service which runs loads of service at times of the day you would expect, so quickly changing your mind from one hill to the next is never a problem. You can even do all the hills in the valley in a day if it brings you pleasure. Other resorts that have their hills linked like the three valleys are great for not needing to get around by bus, however if you are at one side of the side of the three valleys and want to get to the other it can be a mission to get there, and by the time you do its almost time to make your way back. With Chamonix you can get a bus to a hill spend a day truly exploring that mountain, experience some après ski and then head home happy and satisfied with your days skiing.

Once I arrived at Flegere there was a bit of queue to get up but I found that the reason there was so much fresh opportunities was because the Index (the main chair lift) was out of action. 15 minutes after my arrival it opened and I was one of the first down the Floria run with so many fresh opportunities everywhere and not too many people riding, I managed to hit this run again and again all day scoring fresh, jumping of rocks and cliffs, and spinning in to fresh wonderful lovely powder!

I pretty much spent the entire day riding this wonderful lovely soft fresh snow which we have been so long without, before getting the necessary lift down and headed to the rhododendrons bar for some pizza and pints!
