Chamonix Snow Report: 29th January 2014

As good as it gets, blue skies & fresh snow

featured in Snow report Author Robin Deering, Chamonix Editor Updated

The conditions in Chamonix have been as good as they get recently, although thick cloud has moved today to spoil the view and is set to carry on through to end of week.

Up at Grands Montets, it's currently -10 with a breeze in the air & avalanche risk of 3 but the snow is still silky soft after the recent snow fall bringing us around 30cms of snow. Check out the piste preview video for conditions up at GM this morning.

Lorne headed back to Brevent on Monday  and was met with 30-35cm powder on a soft base..
"Angus and I got to the Cornu chairlift on Brevent just after it opened and that’s all we skied all day, switching between the sidestep up to skier’s right of the piste for some fresh lines in excellent powder with lots of rolls and drops, and runs off the back for some more open faces.  The lines skier’s-left off the Cornu ridge had mostly been bombed by the pisteurs and those those that hadn’t were surely quite unstable so we stayed away from that whole area, while the couloirs under Cornu itself were looking a little thin and rocky two days ago so we didn’t chance it but they were still being skied.  Top Bin didn’t open to skiers all day."

Elsewhere in the valley the conditions are good up high but some of the lower slopes, such as Les Houches,  have got a harder pack on the pistes due the wetter snow that would have fallen.

Rob Jarvis from High Mountain Guides made his way over to neighbouring mountain range, Les Aravis, to take some clients ski touring...
"Fantastic mountain weather and good snow conditions.  A very light wind crust near to ridge lines but away from the wind & other ski tracks the snow was stella velvet!"
