Chamonix Snow Report: 29th November 2010

Well we have had a very large amount of snow fall here in Chamonix, which has made it possible for the lift company to get things together and open for the lovely weekend we all just had. It has snowed at least a wee bit each day the past week and it seems like a system might pass through which could stabilise the snow pack before the season really kicks off. The lifts are due to be open again next weekend along with Courmayeur just through the Mont Blanc tunnel in to Italy, which is also on the unlimited ski pass.

The pre-season lift pass deals for season tickets is in its final day tomorrow, so if you fancy a very large area to ski this season grabbing a deal online or in the cash desk before the end of play tomorrow will get you a massive 40% off! Check out some of the price packages even if you only come out for a couple of weeks a year it could work out better value for money to obtain yourself a season pass.

On Saturday after a large amount of snow fall and some really good cold conditions, even though the light was a bit flat to start with, it was of the upmost importance to get that first bin up the Bochard, and experience some of the fresh powder conditions that only those who ventured out before 10 am could truly appreciate! The first run down we were a little dubious to go off the piste as we knew the base could be quit thin this time of year and didn't fancy hitting any rocks. As we headed skiers left down the last half of the Bochard we came to realise that it was amazing! Although there were a few rocks around we managed to score around 4 runs of clean un-touched fresh pow! The same story was happening far skiers right and left but once you made your choice of line and looked towards another it was already tracked out by the many keen skiers and boarders grabbing their first powder runs of the year.

The snow on piste was a little harder packed but we had a lot of fun and ended up staying out most of the day taking the risk of heading down the home run for the last run! If you have fancy new equipment I would advise against this, as it is necessary to get over a river and avoid a ton of rocks and ice on the way down! As the mountain was only open for the weekend, after descending it was time for hot bath and lots of stretching to make sure the same enjoyment was possible the next day.

I didn't quit make first bins the next day and the light seemed fairly flat, but I thought I would at least get out for a couple, especially after it had snowed all night long. Much to my (and everyone else who came up the hill that day) amazement the sun came out, the snow softened up and we could see much more clearly. So we were able to pick lines that we didn't think possible the previous day and started dropping of rocks and getting our spin on, and before we knew it we eneded up spending an entire day on the slopes again!

Now aching muscles we have a week to recover for our next instalment of lovely powder snow, but not long now till the lifts will be open all the time! If you are thinking about heading out for next weekend, let me make the decision for you, lift tickets are 20 euro for the day, flight and accommodations are cheap, so stop wondering and start clicking, get out here!
