Chamonix Snow Report: 30th December 2003

Chamonix valley from the Brevent
Skiing conditions are great at the moment on all the areas of the valley. I have been bashing around the Brevent and Flegere as I was also doing some work up there (check out the photo). Friends of mine have reported good things from Le Tour and of course Les Grands Montets.

The snow yesterday on and off-piste was cold and fine. The pistes are firm and enjoyable. Off-piste the powder is there but not massively thick - there have been damaged skis reported! Whilst it is New Year week there are still lifts with no queues although the most popular ones are busy. It was infuriating to see lifts with empty seats and I hope to be raising this with the lift-company in the New Year.

Today the valley has been overcast and there is forecast for more snow on Thursday.

Don't worry too much about the lack of pistes open - Chamonix is about playing around the official pistes of which there is plenty of easy access, though be aware the risk of avalanche at the moment is considerable.

Have a good one tomorrow night! TOP TIP: if you avoid the booze be sure to have some great crowdless pistes the morning after...
