Chamonix Snow Report: 30th March 2004

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

Cold conditions have been preserving the snow conditions until the last couple of days, although night-times allows the snow to freeze again. Depending on how much temperatures raise in the daytime, this gives rise to 'spring' snow.

The misconception is that spring snow is bits of snow fall which fall between now and the summer. In fact spring snow describes the conditions where the top few centimetres of snow thaw during the early part of the day making skiing comfortable on a firm (frozen from the night before) base. The name of the game is to only ski the depth is shallow - if your tracks are too deep they will be frozen in and the ride spoiled for the day after. Shallow tracks melt and then the top layer freezes flat again. You should stick by these rules!

It is no longer possible to ski back to the town.

The cross-country trails are now closed, even according to official sources.

The PanoChamCam is now fully operational...we have some great images now available on the site webcams index.
