Chamonix Snow Report: 6th April 2010

This time of year if your in the valley you will see the snow change very quickly, just yesterday morning we were enjoying soft powder snow followed by more slushy snow in the afternoon, which then transformed in to pretty hard crusty snow overnight with below freezing conditions. However this afternoon we where hitting some of the south facing slopes getting some nice slush again! So if your out and it has snowed the day before its going to be in your best interests to get up early and make the most of it before the conditions change!

We have some fairly nice and warm spring weather at the moment so its great to get out and enjoy the slush for as long as your legs can stand it! And there is some weather moving in to the valley in the next couple of days so we shall all hope and pray that it brings snow with it. The past couple of weeks have been fairly busy during the Easter holiday period but after this week we shall be entering the end of season mode, some fairly tranquil days shall be had from now on with no more queues (except on epic powder days for first bins!) and chilled out slopes with easy to find powder everywhere that doesn't get tracked out in 32 seconds! So if your pondering on one more ski holiday before next season, then get on the case now and book something here, I can guarantee there will be fun to be had on the snow even in to the first week of May!

So after a fairly cold night, this morning was a bit of a crud fest, and seeing as we haven't been to Brevent for a fair while and Grand Montets was going to take quite some time to soften up, we headed over to Brevent to re-find our love for this hill! There is some pretty cool stuff for everyone on this mountain, some nice easy blues for the beginners and some challenging blacks for the more experienced, and with loads of little features all over the hill to jump on to, over or around! With the fairly warm weather and the snow changing in condition before our eyes there where a lot of avalanches happening all over the hill, so we had to be careful if we where going of piste on which slopes we picked to ride. There had been a fair bit of activity on the Hotel face which is a great ride which we would have done, but choosing the right time of day essential for this as when this slope slides, it goes big!

So with the hotel face off we decided on hitting the Le Cornu lift for the best part of the day heading left and right off the piste to find rocks and features to throw ourselves off. This time of year is great for hitting little jumps, rocks or cliffs as the snow is very forgiving and doesn't hurt so much when you mess it up! Although with the warm weather coming though more rocks can be poking there heads through the snow so it can be useful if your riding around in a group to have someone spotting the landings to make sure everything is all good, or even doing a run first to check them out before hitting them yourself. We pretty much spent the entire afternoon finding lots of little things to drop off and practice our spinning, before getting the bubble lift back down to Chamonix to enjoy a nice wee bit of Après ski with some great deals on beer and wine at Bar'd Up.

Check out what to do around town once the lifts have closed with our Apres Ski Report - a weekly round up of what's hot and where to party in Chamonix!
