Chamonix Snow Report: 7th April 2011

featured in Snow report Author Kieran Sharp, Updated

Things are sure hotting up here in Chamonix; with temperatures frequently breaking 20 degrees in the valley bottom and not even getting below freezing at night it has meant that most of the low down snow apart from the artificial stuff has all gone! This is not a bad thing though, BBQ's are out everywhere, and you can get up early for a nice slushy ski at 9am followed by a bit of mountain biking, climbing or swimming in the afternoon.

There is still a good base up high and although the town has been quite warm at night, up high it is still getting below freezing which at least allows the snowpack to stay a little longer. For this reason in the mornings I would make high recommendation in riding the home run at Grand Montets which is perfectly smooth and soft, although a few rocks poke through, but it is much better than the scratchy ice higher up where the snow has melted and re-freezed. This will mean however that the home run will disappear soon, unless some cooler weather moves in which it doesn't even show any hint of doing on any forecast at the moment!

The lift company are doing their very best at keeping on top of the snow conditions, and they have had a lot of training in this field this season! So don't worry if you are coming out this Easter as you will be in good hands with the guys pushing as much snow as they can around for you to have at least some enjoyment before the season finally comes to an end.

The Flegere, Brevent and Le Tour ski hills are looking pretty desperate and it won't come as a shock to anyone to see these hills close if this weather keeps up over the next few days. There is not much to ride off or even on the piste now, although they are trying to keep it as long as possible while hoping and praying for a large amount of snow to suddenly manifest itself in our valley. It is pretty much necessary to get the lift down from all these hills now, and if you are over then you are pretty much looking at the Grand Montets as the best place to ride.

There are a number of parties coming up to celebrate the end of the winter and bring about the seemingly quick change into summer fun. There will be a massive end of season weekend party on and off the hill starting on the 22nd April where there will be art, music, and some great times guaranteed if you happen to be about this time of year. I guarantee you will have an amazing time if you start clicking and booking a trip out here before the season is really over!
