Chamonix Snow Report: 7th March 2004

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

It has been snowing for the last 36 hours on the top dropping 20cm of fresh fluffy powder. The snow has stopped now and conditions are clearing. Tomorrow should be an excellent day. Nonetheless the hard-ish base is lurking just under the new stuff.

On-piste conditions will be lovely no doubt. Off-piste natuaral stability will be low and avalanches will be easily triggered as the binding to the old top layer will be poor. Extreme caution is advised for the next couple of days at least.

It is no longer possible to ski back to the town (unless you want rough ride) but nevermind. There are still 16km of 'crunchy' cross-country skiing open but when I went running (yes, running) on them yesterday they were getting slushed up by the rain.

The PanoChamCam is now fully operational...we have some great images now available on the site webcams index. We have a few more on their way....
