Chamonix Snow Report: 7th May 2010

featured in Snow report Author Kieran Sharp, Updated

Powder! Massive amounts of snow has fallen, especially high up in Chamonix so epic fresh and undisturbed lines is back on the cards! The weather is moving in and out so visibility hasn't always been its best, but the weather is bringing more snow with it and looks like it could clear for the last weekend of the Grand Montets, which will bring much enjoyment for the few that reside in this amazing valley!

So that will be it for the winter or at least the pistes! After 9th May the Grand Montets will be closed until it reopens for mountain bikers, hill walkers and climbers around mid-June. However never forget that if you are a keen ski or snowboard mountaineer that the Aguille du Midi is open throughout the year and it is possible to ride something up there every month of the year. Great amounts of mountaineering knowledge and skills are necessary and hiring a guide is always a good plan of action! So I shall as the weather clears be setting my sights on some of the routes possible from the Aguille lift after Grand Montets closes.

Yesterday was amazing the between the weather coming in and out we actually had a couple of clear runs while riding down from the top lift at Grand Montets. We have waited the whole season for this, top lifts, no queues, and only fresh powder before you, scoring fresh lines throughout the entire day! We pretty much just kept doing laps of the top lift as the snow was amazing up high and now and again you had a nice clear bit to see where you where going! There aren't many holidaymakers around at the moment and even a lot of the seasonaires have left now so there really are only a few people on the hill, if your thinking of coming out it would be a good idea to mix your holiday up a bit this weekend by getting the last and probably one of the best days riding this weekend, followed by maybe a trip up the Aguille du Midi and maybe even start playing around with some of the summer activities now possible.

The good thing about Chamonix in comparison to other resorts, is that it's a fully functioning town, it doesn't close during the inter-season's even the longer inter-season between the end of the summer and start of the winter there will always be an activity to get involved in and no matter what the weather is doing there is always something to be enjoyed in this town. Some bars, restaurants and the night clubs shut down while its quieter but you will always have some where to eat, to drink and have a wee party so don't fear book a holiday out here today!

Check out what to do around town once the lifts have closed with our Apres Ski Report - a weekly round up of what's hot and where to party in Chamonix!
