Chamonix snow report and forecast

Discover the latest Chamonix snow conditions

Author Caro Blackwell, Destination Editor Updated

We have enjoyed several sunny and warm days here in Chamonix during the last week and we did get good fresh snowfall of around 15 - 20 cm on Tuesday over 1400 - 1800 metres. So enjoy the sunny and powder days. Today the sun is shining!

The next few days

It looks like we’ve got some really warm and sunny days coming up for the rest of this week and over the weekend. It is unlikely to freeze under around 3500 - 4000 metres. Then the temperature will drop again with light to moderate snow forecast over 2000 metres during Monday and on Tuesday, with the freezing level down to around 1400 metres.

Avalanche risk

The current avalanche risk through most of the northern Alps is 2/3 out of 5 with the levels increasing as the days get warmer and the melting snow gets heavier. There is a real danger of wet snow avalanches, especially on days that there is not a good refreeze up at higher altitudes, which is what is happening at the moment. Take heed of the avalanche warnings in Chamonix before even considering venturing off piste.

Top tips for skiing this week

Enjoy this weeks spring skiing in Chamonix here are our top tips, out on the pistes this week:

  • The temperature is changeable in the mountains, we’re properly spring skiing now, but it may be chilly out of the sun. So thinner layers, a shell jacket rather than a thick winter coat, more lightweight gloves are a good idea, and open those vents as the day warms up!
  • Don't forget the sunscreen! Even when the windchill is high, the sun in the mountains is still intense.
  • You’ll need your goggle lenses for sun for the next few days
  • Early morning the pistes are harder packed and maybe a bit icy and then a bit slushy in the afternoon. So coordinate your ski time to whichever conditions you prefer.
  • Get your skis and boards waxed as the wetter snow can slow you down a bit!
  • Book the sunny restaurant terrace for long relaxed lunch.
