Chamonix Snow Report: 1st January 2014
Plenty of snow means there is fun to be had all across the valley!
From the top of Grands Montets to the bottom of Les Houches the Chamonix Valley has been well covered with snow and conditions for the New Year are looking great! Not only on the pistes up high, but also down low the valley...
The beginner areas of Savoy and Planards are in great condition right now, perfect for those first few days learning and honing your ski technique. With all areas able to be used for lessons it means less crowding and all lifts are running so queues can be kept to a minimum. On both Planards and Savoy the snow is thick enough that rocks and grass are not coming through and with the help of the cold conditions and snow canons the pistes are being well topped up, allowing for some great groomers!
The beginner slope in Argentiere is similar with great snow coverage and with more sunshine hours during the day this could well be the best place to take little ones to practice those 'pizza' and 'french fries'. With little queuing at the button tow and a good cafe at the bottom for a hot drink it should keep everyone happy.
The cross country tracks in Argentiere and down in Chamonix have greatly benefited from the recent snow fall and again the low temperatures are keeping the tracks in great condition for both skaters and traditional style. So if you are looking for something with a bit more of a cardio work out then now is certainly the time to try 'ski de fond'!
And keep an eye on the athletics field - they have been icing that up for some speed skating and it is looking mighty slippy right now!
So a great few days in store...but with one thing to remember! Chamonix Rush Hour! It begins around 15:30 on a busy day, sometimes earlier, so be prepared when you are leaving the slopes and maybe think about keeping some hot chocolate and snacks in the car for the journey home!
