Chamonix Snow Report: 25th February 2015

Sneaky lunchtime laps on a bluebird powder day!

featured in Snow report Author Pam Williamson, Chamonix Editor Updated

Waking up to the clear blue skies yesterday morning, after several days of continued snow fall, how could I not go for a few wee cheeky runs on my lunch break?!

So after a quick dash across town I was in the Aiguille du Midi cable car with plenty of other excited skiers and snowboarders and heading up to the mid station. I reckon around half continued up to the top but the rest of us disembarked at the mid station ready to enjoy the fresh powder of the descent from Plan d'Aiguille.

Making our way far skiers right of the station meant a bit of a shuffle along on the flat (worse on a snowboard than on skis!) but gave us some great terrain to play around in and some lovely fresh snow to enjoy. There were still a few sharks hiding just under the surface so it was still hard to completely let go in a few areas, other rocks were more obvious and it was easy to negotiate our way round them. The trees further down were a bit of a different matter and after a bit of bush whacking we all arrived at the mogul fields that welcome you to the route home.

The track out is in really good condition and is nice and fast on a snowboard which makes it easier to squeeze in a few more laps...or just one more in my case. A short walk from the Grepon parking and we were back in the now more sizeable queue for the cable car for a second run.

This time making our way straight under the cables before turning skiers right we found some of the best untracked powder that I've had all season. Slopes that were at a beautiful pitch with not a track in sight...heaven! Blue skies, powder snow, fresh tracks, good friends and barely a sole around us. This is why we live and work in Chamonix.

Sadly the short walk after this run was back to the office rather than back to the cable car but for a mid week lunch break, this one was not half bad!
