Skiing in a whiteout in Le Tour

Stormy spring weather in Chamonix

featured in Snow report Author Greg van der Donk, Chamonix Contributor Updated

It can be easy to write off a day when it's raining heavily in the valley, but with most of the skiing happening 1000m higher, this usually means it's snowing somewhere.

We went to le tour, it had snowed, but we couldn't see a thing. Thick fog enveloped most of the mountain. After waiting for the lifts up to Tête de Balme to open we finally found good snow and visibility in the trees. Avalanche risk was at 3/5 today so caution was required off-piste.

The weather is forecast to stay quite volatile, with lot's of wind and snow over the next couple of days. We should see it settle down a bit however starting Sunday. There will be all kinds of skiing over the next week, from powder to slush, as we transition into spring.
