What's On in Chamonix August 2017

Enjoy the majestic sight of these wonderful birds of prey and savour a traditional Savoyard meal up at Planpraz du Brevent. Owls, eagles and vultures will be accompanied by their handlers for you to admire at this spectacular location. The next dates are 3rd, 17th and 24th August.

Thousands of trail runners gather from all over the world to take part in one of the five gruelling races that take place during UTMB week. The iconic UTMB race itself, is a circuit around the foot of Mont Blanc that passes through France, Italy and Switzerland; participants will run around 170km, experiencing a difference in altitude of 9400 metres. The other races are: PTL - 290km, CCC - 101km, TDS - 119km and the OCC - 55km.

The Triathlon du Mont Blanc in Passy includes various difference races for everyone from first-timers to serious competitors. Its lakeside location makes it a great spectator spot too, with plenty of good viewpoints to watch the race take place. There's a sprint triathlon, an Olympic distance Triathlon and a Half Iron Man that you can take part in. The atmosphere is very friendly and there are even some races specifically for children.

The Fete des Guides is a four day event which celebrates the mountain guides of the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix and raise funds for their charity (you pay a small entry fee). The fete is a mixture of traditional ceremonies, adventure activities and partying, with the grand finale being the sound and light show at Les Gaillands on the final evening. Expect lots of fun for all ages and music to include everything from alpine horns to DJs.

Cham au Sommet is back for its second year, with a celebration of all things climbing and mountaineering, in the centre of Chamonix. Guest appearances include Nina Caprez and Romain Desgranges. Nina will be live streaming an exhibition climb from just outside the tourist office.

The 50th International Exhibition and sale of minerals will be held in the Majestic convention centre in Chamonix on 5th and 6th August.

Spend an alternative evening out in Chamonix by supporting the local Ice Hockey team Les Pionniers. They have three dates in August where you can watch them in either friendly or competitive matches, which usually start around 20:30.

Local photographer Teresa Kaufman offers you the chance to discover hidden parts of the Chamonix valley, whilst learning new photographic tips an techniques. Photo walks take place in different location and dates on Mondays and Thursdays in August.
