The main street leading towards Chamonix's iconic train station is going to become semi-pedestrianised ahead of this winter.

You may have noticed that some work has already started this summer on Avenue Michel Croz, with (very noisy) extra drainage being dug and cables re-laid along the length of the road.

Plans for the work, which is set to start on 7th September, including getting rid of parking bays along the street, widening the pavements and terraces for local businesses and upgrading the road surface. In addition a bike lane will also be created leading towards the station.

The first phase of construction sees the pavements and terraces being widened, and as a result parking on the street will be prohibited from 7th September. Concrete will be laid over the space of 2 days so access to some businesses may be restricted at this time.

Chamonix council will communicate with each of the businesses to advise the dates and try to create as little disruption for the businesses and for people looking to get access along the street. The work is expected to take around 2.5 months to complete.

At the time of writing it is unclear if parking spaces will be created elsewhere to compensate for those lost with these developments.
