Tramway du Mont Blanc Helps with Forestry Work

Not just a tourist attraction, the Tramway du Mont Blanc is also used for essential forestry work

For 20 years, the communal woods of Saint-Gervais, bordering the Mont Blanc Tramway, have been unused due to access difficulties. This week the Office National des Forêts conducted a deforestation of a 200m3 area at the Col de Voza, with the tram carriages being used to transport the logs.

Sections of forest were cleared near to the tracks and the logs transported to the tram stop at the Col de Voza, were they were loaded on to special wagons and brought down to Saint-Gervais, from where they will be taken to a saw mill in nearby Combloux.

Better known for transporting tourists than wood, the Tramway du Mont Blanc connects the town of Saint-Gervais with the mountains of Les Houches with the final stop being at the tip of the Bionnassay glacier. Open in both summer and winter, it gives access to hiking trails, ski pistes, mountaineering routes and, of course, to the summit of Mont Blanc via the Gouter and Tete Rousse huts.
