Chamonix Snow Report: 2nd March 2010

featured in Snow report Author Kieran Sharp, Updated

There is a lot of good snow around at the moment, just off the piste and the pistes themselves are in very good condition however out of the maintained areas there is some very unstable snow from wind slab, heavy snow fall and warmer conditions. There have been some large avalanches in the valley so until the snow conditions stabilise its probably a good idea to stay within the area, and exercise extreme caution if venturing in to the backcountry. There has been some small snow flurries but nothing of the epic proportions that was laid down over the weekend, hopefully the snow conditions will stabilise soon and we can get on some nice tours.

With the snow conditions we decided to go and explore some of Verbier and the four valleys now included on the unlimited ski pass here in Chamonix, looking at exploring mainly the pistes and the park. There are many options available for exploring this vast area during your stay in Chamonix, you could get the train from Chamonix to Chable which is at the foot of Verbier with a bubble which connects to the town. However you do have to leave fairly early on to get the last train back, so you could drive over and it only takes just over an hour when the roads are clear. Or why not mix your holiday up a little and spend a couple of nights in a nice chalet in Verbier where you can experience two resorts on one lift pass!

So the other day we decided to treat ourselves to a little luxury spending 2 nights at the wonderful chalet D'amont, with its central location and very comfortable living space with outstanding views of the mountains you may find it difficult to tear yourself away! It was a really good way to spend some time properly exploring the area and enjoying some of the Verbier night life! Verbier itself is a massive mountain and there are many areas to explore here. We spent a good bit of time exploring around the Mont Fort area where there are a variety of massive descents heading in different directions in to some of the other valleys included on the unlimited pass. We spent most of our time exploring the main Verbier area dipping in to the areas immediately next to the resort, and concentrating most of our efforts on exploring the off piste possibilities looking at entrance and exit points to some seriously cool descents! There is a lot of potential in the area so we where keenly looking for some of the best spots to hit for when we come back here on an epic powder day!

After our bit of exploring we spent the rest of our time in the resort hitting the air bag which is after a large jump giving us a unique opportunity to practice some tricks we've been shying away from in the park, with the ability to land without pain when attempting our manoeuvres in the air.

We spent a lot of time during our Après ski and night out at the Pub Mont Fort which is just behind the lift station in Verbier, it's a massive bar in a 200 year old building and has some great DJ's and a fantastic atmosphere with a menu to suit! We spent our last night in resort relaxing in the luxury chalet D'amont before reluctantly heading back to Chamonix. If you fancy mixing up your holiday in Chamonix with a couple of nights in Verbier email benmolloy@chaletdamont.co.uk and get yourself a little luxury in Verbier!
