Beginners ski-passes

The majority of the beginner ski areas in and around Chamonix are on the valley floor, making them easy to access for everyone. They offer the perfect environment to try your hand at skiing for the first time or to get the kids going, and tickets can be bought at the individual ticket offices in each of the areas. In some places, there are special rates for students and seniors available – ask at the ticket desk for details.

Due to the low altitude of many of the beginner ski areas, they tend to be the first to suffer from lack of snow at the start/end of season. However, there are additional beginner slopes in Les Houches, at the top of the Prarion gondola, as well as at Plan Praz (Brevent) so you will always find suitable slopes to learn on whenever you come to visit.

Booking cable car time slots

At certain times of the year, it is necessary to book a specific time slot on certain lifts, ahead of time. This predominantly affects the Aiguille du Midi during the peak holiday seasons but also applies to the top cable car at the Grands Montets (once it has been rebuilt of course!). When the online booking isn't available for either of these, you can still book in advance at one of the lift pass offices in resort.

Pedestrian & Alpinist Passes
You don't have to ski or board to enjoy the beautiful panoramas at altitude, as many of the lifts are also accessible to pedestrians in winter. You can purchase single or return trips on specific lifts and there are slight variations of these passes specifically for alpinists. Ask at any of the cash desk for full details on all of the pass options available. Pedestrians can use the following lifts in winter:

  • Gondolas: Brevent-Plan Praz, Flegere, Plan Joran, Le Tour, Vallorcine, Le Prarion
  • Cable cars: Aiguille du Midi, Brevent, Bellevue
  • Trains: Montenvers

Ski insurance

Prices shown above are without insurance, which you can add on when buying online or at the Ski Pass Offices in the valley. E-gloo ski insurance covers you for rescue and evacuation (search and rescue costs), ski pass reimbursement (and ski lessons if unused) and offers various additional benefits. It costs €3 per day for 1-5 days duration or €18 total for 6-21 days duration.
