Chamonix Snow Report: 1st December 2014

It's December.. now where's all the snow??!??

It's the 1st December, time to start opening the doors on your advent calendars, waxing your snowboards and skis and getting ready for the season ahead.. although one thing seems to be missing.. the early season snow!

The big dump of snow that we had at the beginning of November has all but melted away at lower altitude, with rain and low clouds moving in, leaving us wondering when the next dump is due?!?

The weather forecasts this week promise a bit of a flurry towards the end of the week at around 2,500m (maybe 5-6cm) and around 10-15cm expected at the height of the Aiguille du Midi. The temperature has dropped today and should remain below freezing at mid mountain level, so hopefully that will continue and prevent any more fresh snow from melting.

We've not had an early season skiing yet up at Grands Montets, where they normally open part of the area up if conditions are good enough, however it's still looking pretty patch up there with not enough snow to get you back down from the top to the mid station. Looks like we'll have to wait a little longer to use the new Plan Joran gondola..

At the moment it feels like we will have to wait until the 13th December before the majority of lifts open, and once they are open you can check in on the live lift status to see exactly what's open where.

Also it looks unlikely that the Nordic Monster test or the opening of Les Bois XC skiing trails will be taking place this weekend, so we'll let you know if/what the dates change to.

For the most up to date views of resort, keep an eye on our webcams, and don't forget to sign up for our dump alert where we'll tell you about that all important next dump of snow. Winter is coming, it's just a little late..!
