Avalanche closes Col du Montets again

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

Around 6pm last night, the Col de Montets (the road that links Chamonix with Switzerland) was once again blocked when an avalanche slid down the mountainside and across the road. The slide came down from the couloir des Nants and has blocked a 40m section of the RN 205 with 3-4m of heavy snow.

We reported recently that local authorities had taken the decision to trigger 2 massive avalanches from the surrounding mountains in this area, closing the road for nearly a week. This time snow ploughs were deployed immediately to commence clearing but the road will remain closed for the time being. The rain/snow limit is currently hovering between 1000 – 1400m resulting in dense snow falling on top of the snow pack. The risk of another slide occurring is sufficient to keep the road closed but Vallorcine can be accessed via the railway tunnel.
