Kandahar 2007 cancelled

featured in News & reviews Author Chris Richard, Site Editor Updated

Despite the fresh snow at altitude and the good skiing conditions in the Chamonix valley in general, the recent spell of mild weather has forced the race organisers to cancel the les Houches stage of the World Cup. The condition of the Verte racecourse has deteriorated due to rain and unseasonable temperatures have prevented the manufacture of artificial snow. Furthermore the cold weather is not expected to return in time for the race that was due to be held over the weekend of the 20th of January. The piste is still open to the public but organisers feared that the poor snow coverage could have jeopardised competitors’ safety.

The cancellation of the downhill has come as a great disappointment to everybody involved. We can rest assured however, that Les Houches and The Verte will remain a firm fixture on the FIS calendar in the future. January 26th and 27th are the dates for your diary next year.

FIS has yet to announce an alternative venue, but Val d’Isere has already put itself forward as a potential replacement. The Tarentaise resort is a favourite with World Cup Director Gunther Hujara and is reported to have good skiing conditions.
