Two Climbers killed in Avalanche

featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

On Wednesday around 17.00hrs, a guide from Megeve and his client were returning from a day of glacier touring, when having just finished crossing the Grand Montet on Skis on the last descent, sudden drama struck.

In a matter of seconds, whole surroundings of the Glacier broke apart. A massive Sérac fall (approximately 500m in diameter) from the front of the Argentiere glacier avalanched up to 600m, bombarding the climbers with vast blocks of ice. With such a huge amount of ice collapsing, there was no change of survival for either climber. The rescue team found the first traces and first climber after approximately 45 minutes. The second climber was found shortly after.

President of the Company Guide du Megeve, stated that there was no professional errors made by the guide, and that this kind of event is extremely rare. The circumstances which unfolded could not have been predicted. It was very unfortunate that the guide happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
