What's on in Chamonix October 2018

Summer is over and interseason well and truly underway in Chamonix. It's at this time of year that the number of tourists dwindles and the locals get their town back for a few weeks before the winter season hits.

But don't let the lift closures and October rain get you down; there's still plenty to do in the valley in October. From golf tournaments to first division hockey to wine tasting, here is a quick rundown of some of the best events happening over the coming month.

Golf tournament - 5th to 7th

The Grand Prix Golf Tournament 2018 is open to international players with a handicap lower than 2.4 and counts toward your World Amateur Golf Ranking. The Maurice Herzog Cup takes place on October 5th, 6th and 7th at the golf club in Les Praz, situated five minutes drive away from Chamonix town centre. This magnificent par 72 course is overlooked by some of the biggest peaks in the Alps - the Aiguille du Midi, Les Drus, La Aiguille Verte, and of course the biggest of them all, the Mont Blanc. Wine tasting lunch - 6th & 7th

This month, the Michelin-starred Albert Premier is pleased to introduce the Carillon wines of the Burgundy region. The morning tasting session is followed by a gastronomic lunch in the Albert Premier restaurant where the new head chef Damien Leveau has designed a menu to match perfectly with the wines of the region.

Triathlon - 7th

The Chirv’Athlon is a triathlon with a difference, notably the lack of a lake making the swimming part a bit difficult so they have two cycling stages instead. This Chirv’Athlon, consists of a 6.2km run, a 10.6km road cycle and an 8.6km cross-country bike ride. All stages take place around the roads and trails of Servoz, which boasts some beautiful scenery and very pretty little villages. You can either register as a team of three or, for a bit of self-punishment, you can register individually and tackle the lot by yourself. Click on the web link on this page or visit Servoz Tourist Office for more information. Learn more and sign up here.

Hockey games - 5th, 16th, 21st, 26th & 31st

The new hockey season is underway with the Chamonix Pionniers competing in the first division Synerglace Magnus League. Home games take place throughout the winter and usually start at 20:30, with tickets costing €13 for adults and €9 for children (free for children under 8 years). There is a bar so you can get a few beers in while you watch the game. They also serve hot food and snacks.

Alternatively you could start the night with dinner at the Micro Brewery de Chamonix (The MBC) just over the road from the ice rink and then head over to watch the match. You'll often see the players celebrating (or drowning their sorrows) in the MBC afterwards. Remember to take some warm clothes and shoes, hats and gloves - you are going to be sitting in a large freezer in a ski resort for a while. Tickets can be bought on the door or online. Visit the hockey club website for further details

Table quiz - every Thursday

It’s hilariously funny at the Monkey Bar Thursday quiz. There’s always great banter, you win free booze, and you might just learn something. The winning team get a €50 donation to the charity of their choice, and a magnum of Champagne to rub it in the looser’s faces with a malignant pleasure only fit for quiz winners. Start exercising your brains. From 21:30 every Thursday throughout October.
