An earthquake of 3.8 magnitude was recorded on the outskirts of the Chamonix Valley, near Vallorcine this weekend, resulting in a large number of people being woken in their beds.

One report from the US Geological Survey suggests that there was one earthquake at 23:17, at a depth of around 2km underground which registered 3.8 magnitude.

However, the Swiss Seismological Service reports that there were four separate quakes one at 12:40 of 1.3 magnitude, one at 01:17 of 3.4 magnitude, one at 01:25 of 1.5 magnitude and another at 01:29 of 1.5 magnitude.

It's not uncommon for Chamonix to feel the effects of earthquakes, in fact there have been quite a few that we've reported on over the last few years:

10th April 2016 - 3.0 magnitude

2nd December 2015 - 1.4 magnitude

24th November 2014 - 3.3 magnitude

25th October 2012 - 3.8 magnitude

26th July 2011 - 4.5 magnitude

6th December 2010 - 2.9 magnitude

8th September 2005 - 4.5 magnitude
