Evening Train Tours - every Thursday

Starting on 7th June, the little red tourist train will be running evening sightseeing tours every Thursday throughout July and August. Setting off from Chamonix centre at 7pm, the train will trundle off towards the traditional chalets and wooden farmhouses of Les Bois and Les Praz, arriving at the stone chapel in time to see the sun set over the mountains. Commentary will be given in French only, but the pleasant ride and exceptional views alone will be worth the 6€ ticket price. The trip will take about an hour, finishing back in Chamonix. Evening Train Tours

Chamonix Yoga Festival 8th July

This three day festival will be promoting the benefits of yoga, massage and healthy eating with classes and workshops run by internationally renowned yoga teacher Simon Park. Various different yoga styles, dance classes, Ayurvedic medicine workshops, and vegan cookery classes will be taking place at the Majestic with some free outdoor sessions being held in Place Triangle de l’Amitié (outside the tourist office). Bastille Day 14th July

France’s national holiday is marked by daytime family entertainments, followed by live music, street parties and fireworks. The celebration is usually marked on the evening of the 13th in Chamonix, with daytime events taking place on the 14th, and on the evening of the 14th in Les Houches. So, if you can handle two nights of partying, you can celebrate Bastille Day twice! Details of this year’s celebration have not yet been confirmed, so keep an eye on our Chamonix news page for updates closer to the time.

Tour de France 20th-23rd July

Not one, but four stages of the Tour de France will be taking place within a stone’s throw of Chamonix this summer. Although none of the stages pass through the town itself, they all take place within an hour’s drive in all directions, putting Chamonix right at the hub of the action. Our little town is also a great place to base yourself for riding a few of the local cols while you’re here, or just for hanging out and watching the more far-flung stages in one of the many sports-mad bars in Chamonix. The local stages are:

  • Stage 17: Wednesday, July 20 - Bern to Finhaut-Emosson - 184km
  • Stage 18: Thursday, July 21 - Sallanches to Megève - 17km individual time trial
  • Stage 19: Friday, July 22 - Albertville to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc - 146km
  • Stage 20: Saturday, July 23 - Megève to Morzine - 146km

Cosmojazz Festival 23rd-31st July

No longer strictly a jazz festival, this 8 day extravaganza embraces all types of music from all corners of the world - some of them quite obscure. It doesn’t just confine itself to typical music venues either; you can expect to find concerts taking place on top of mountains, beside lakes, amongst the glaciers - we’ve even had a grand piano suspended upside down over Place Balmat, pianist and all… Many of the concerts are open air and completely free of charge, all you need is your lift pass to access the venues. Some of the evening concerts require a ticket, and there are plenty of official and unofficial jam sessions where you can see the musicians kicking back and having fun late into the night. Cosmojazz Festival

Birds Dinner Show 28th July

Enjoy the majestic sight of these wonderful birds of prey swooping over the mountains and savour a traditional Savoyard meal up at Planpraz du Brevent. Owls, eagles and vultures will be accompanied by their handlers for you to admire at this spectacular location. Bird of prey shows will be held on various dates throughout July and August this summer. Bird of Prey Dinner Show

Trail du Tour des Fiz 31st July

Another grueling but exceptionally beautiful trail race; this one just outside of Chamonix on the high plateau above Passy. Four races of differing lengths take place around the mountain refuges of the Chaine des Fiz, a stunning place with amazing views but very remote and challenging terrain. If you’re not taking part then you can still join in the fun at the start/finish line at Plaine Joux where you’ll find snack bars, activities, hiking trails, parapenting, and plenty to keep you entertained in between cheering on knackered runners. Trail du Tour des Fiz

As well as all of the above, July also brings an exciting line-up of music concerts, cultural evenings, local markets, antique fairs, guided tours, entertainments, and more. Don’t forget to keep an eye on our Chamonix Events Calendar for the full schedule.
