Chamonix Snow Report: 21st December 2006

featured in Snow report Author Ellie Mahoney, Chamonix Editor Updated

The bad news is that we still haven't had any new snow since the last report, but the good news is that we've had some very cold weather that has allowed the snow cannons to run nearly 24 hours a day, much improving Grands Montets. Also, this weekend sees the resort open more lifts and pistes with Le Tour and Brevent partially opening; hopefully it'll be enough to cope with the influx over Christmas. Grands Montets will also be opening more lifts over the weekend: the Herse chair among others and the top cable car will possibly open sometime next week. Today we noticed more work being done on the cable car up to Lognan, so hopefully that will open on Saturday too. The only part that will be left to open is the Retour Pendant chair out of the Combe de la Pendant, which will probably have to wait until we've had a real snowfall.

The snow cannons have been hard at work at Grands Montets all week, and have been running all the way down to Argentiere on the Pierre a Ric, which is looking good for its opening this weekend. The snow cannons have also been doing a good job on the top section of Bochard, which I was complaining about in my last report. The bales of straw that were covering the rocks are now mostly buried with a few stubborn ones refusing to disappear, and the rocks on the piste are looking smaller by the day. The moguls in the top section seem to be reducing too, especially at the narrow left-hand bend.

The snow that the cannons have been making has been unusually good too, and could even pass as the real stuff if you're not too fussy. Underneath the loose artificial snow, the base is very firm and, as I discovered when I lost my edge, almost icy, so a little care is needed on the balder areas of Marmotton and Bochard. But in general the pistes that are open at Grands Montets are in good condition.

I didn't dare venture far off piste as there are still far too many rocks not covered at all and far too many only thinly covered, which is even worse. However, this doesn't seem to deter some folks here, and people doggedly go off piste no matter what the conditions are like. There are trails all over the place. Higher up on the glacier there are trails down the face from the Grands Montets, and it looks like it would have been good, deep snow free from rocks. I guess the hike up is enough to stop most people taking advantage of it, including myself. There are some large moguls developing off piste too, notably halfway down Bochard just left of the orange netting. The skier's right of the section has the smallest ones and the snow seemed a little softer there too.

This time of year Grands Montets doesn't see much sun, but by 1 or 2 pm it does get a little, which today helped to alleviate some of the icier sections of Marmotton. It was a case of stay on the right in shade and struggle to keep an edge, or head to the left into the sunny patches and find firm but compliant snow good for laying down a carved turn – much better I think. Weatherwise things don't look like changing much in the near future but at least it's going to stay cold. We've had some heavy frosts in the valley lasting all day long, and it almost looks like snow on the trees. This cold weather also means that the snow cannons will be able to continue running. At this rate I think it will be a white Christmas, but sadly, a mostly artificial one.
