Chamonix Snow Report: 24th March 2008

featured in Snow report Author Jim Brady, Updated

Well it has certainly been a few interesting days over the Easter holidays. The snow has been falling day and night. The accumulation measured at the top of the Bochard has gone from 316cm to 420cm in 4 days and more than that will have fallen, but been carried away in the wind. There is a metre more at the Lognan mid station than there was there on Thursday- we even have half a metre of snow in Chamonix town which has not seen snow for a month!

The snow, the wind and safety considerations have been playing havoc with the lifts over the past few days too, with the system almost totally closed on Friday but thankfully more or less back to full operation today with the exception of a couple of the high lifts. The snow is fantastic both on and off piste, but the poor visibility, and falling snow has slightly curtailed the fun. Also the avalanche risk has been at 4, high which has also put a dampener on activities.

Despite the poor atmospheric conditions and the avalanche risk, the lure of the fresh snow has been irresistible to the Easter visitors and valley hardcore alike, and by Monday fresh lines were hard to find, however the dream forest at Grands Montets is still delivering great sport with snow and lines in abundance. The pistes are loaded and the off piste despite getting tracked quickly in Chamonix is in great condition with all the new snow, and likely to be so for many days to come.

On a more serious note, the avalanche risk remains at the limit that permits the slopes to remain open, and is set to remain so for the next few days, and at least until the current round of storms stop. Take care of your self and others, and go fully equipped. When venturing off piste, be aware of the devastating affects on others that riding or skiing directly above them might have, and avoid it where you can, plus look out for others that might be endangering you, and take evasive action.

We are enjoying some of the best snow of the season, and it is set to continue, so if you are sitting in snow bound Britain and have a bit of holiday left then what are you waiting for, hit the putor and get your self out here this weekend, and bring your powder board and fat skis with you, oh yes I forgot to mention it is very cold so bring a thick fleece.

The avalanche risk remains at 4, High, the weather forecast is for more snow overnight and further showers in the morning, but brighter in the afternoon, with strong winds at altitude.
