Chamonix Snow Report: 3rd February 2011

featured in Snow report Author Kieran Sharp, Updated

So it's getting pretty difficult to remain positive about the snow conditions in most other hills except Grand Montets so forgive me if I only write about this hill, as it's the only place where decent conditions remain. We had a fair bit of wind high up yesterday which hit the hills of Le Tour, Flegere and Brevent. This process unfortunately stripped a lot of snow away and meant one of the slopes at Flegere had to close.

It's starting to look like some of the south facing hills might close unless a lot of snow falls very soon! Rocks are poking out and the base is very low. The guys who piste the slopes are doing an amazing job with snow making, and dragging snow from off the piste on to it, to make it possible for all who visit the valley have as much fun as possible! If you are coming out soon don't be put off by my comments, there is plenty of snow to ride on the Grand Montets, its remained in good condition and the snow cannons have been on 24/7.

Riding the Grand Montets today was actually one of the best days I've had on the hill this year! The snow has been reasonably soft, and there are loads of things to jib on so I'm loving it. If all you are out here for is a week, you won't be disappointed with your holiday, and if you find you are, you can locate Ande R in Argenitere who will buy you a shot and it will guarantee you find more snow.

Yesterday at Flegere, no word of a lie, we found some powder! It was windblown from one side of the mountain to the other and during the run we had surprise ice death situations, followed by the closure of the run, but we actually had turns in what reminded us of the feeling of powder! It's unfortunate that we could see the closure of some more runs in the valley, but with Chamonix having aspects of slope which face every direction, such a steep valley, and with some of the highest altitude skiing possible in Europe, it's one of the best choices for a holiday given the current conditions being felt throughout the continent.

Right now it's all about enjoying the mountains, getting out in the fresh air, and experiencing some of the great restaurants and bars on and off the hill. If you are booking a holiday or are thinking about it, you will no doubt have a great time if you decide to visit the most wonderful valley in the entire world!
